Apple //e and Win XP

Is there an Apple //e emulator that will run effectively on a Win XP
machine? I was able to run an old Apple //e program with AppleWin 1.4
on my Win 98 system with no problem. When I tried it on a new XP
system, the AppleWin program launches with a dialog box telling me the
emulator is calibrating. Then nothing. Ctrl-Alt-Del indicates the
program is "Not Responding". I even tried a newer version (1.12.3)
and got the same "Not Responding" result. I'd love to get this old
program running again. Thanks.
