A different speech synthesizer

There's quite a lot of discussion going on about the Echo II card, so I
thought I'd bring up S.A.M. (Software Automated Mouth) which is a far
better, if less common, speech card. It has English text and phoneme
modes as well as adjustments for pitch and speed.
What is especially interesting is that the follow-up to the S.A.M. card
was a version of the software that works with the existing Apple II
hardware and does a pretty fine job of it.
Both versions of the software are available at
http://apple2.luddite.ca/ (bottom of page)
Note that the docs included in the software-only version are actually
from the hardware version and the pokes for pitch and speed are
incorrect.
