Some odd things can happen when the Desktop file in ICONS/ gets messed--
which happens from time to time. Try deleting the Desktop file in ICONS/ on
your boot disk. (Won't hurt to delete Desktop files in ICONS/ on other disks,
too.) Otherwise, you may need to run a disk repair utility like ProSel-16.
If you are saying that you have bunches of GS System boot diskettes and
all of them suddenly give the same messed up behavior (and no hard disk is
installed), then, (if scrapping Desktop on one of the boot disks doesn't fix
things) it seems like the problem is likely to be in the IIgs.
Check you Control Panel settings. Might try removing your RAM Disk (if
you have one set up). Possibly, your BatRAM battery is cratering.
You may have a card or cable making an intermittant contact. With power
OFF, pull and replace each card in your system. Do the same for connecting
cables inside the case.
Beyond the above, you are into stuff like IC's making poor contact in a
socket-- scootch up and re-seat IC's.
If your IIgs is loaded with power-sucking cards, removing one or more of
those may eliminate the problem-- in which case you start to suspect a
problem on the card or your power supply.
