Sorry to those I offended. My pet peeves on cba2: yEnc files and rar
files and yEnc encoded rar files exacerbate the irritation. When someone
goes to all the work of scanning the issues, the extra step of making them
accessable to the majority of AppleII users is worth the effort.
No one was offended. However, with a quick Google-search I was able to
find nine or ten yEnc-compatible UNIX newsreaders.
If yEnc files and .rar files are acceptable on cba2, then the mp3 guys
from spain may as well have cba2, I will have no use for it and stop
monitoring it for any occasional apple2 post.
.rar files are fairly common in binary groups because they don't suffer
as many of the corruption problems as other formats when the files are
split and transmitted, and AFAICT, "binary" includes cba2.
As I understand it, if you have one of RAR Labs' (www.rarsoft.com)
products, you can view that file I posted regardless of whether you have
a Mac or a *NIX box. (I'm not 100% sure - I don't have a Mac or a UNIX
machine, and the website documentation was less that clear about SFX
files.) I made it a self-extractor for those that don't have the product.
And yes, I am being petty because I can not process yEnc posts and rar
files on ground.ecn.uiowa.edu nor any other machine I have with access to
the internet.
And your remarks about "flowerpot" machines are unnecessary in this
group - I'm sure there are plenty of .flame newsgroups dedicated to
people shouting at each other about whether UNIX, Windows or MacOS/OSX
is better.
And yEnc, though it was poorly executed when initially implemented, does
a great deal for cutting down on the overhead generated by "traditional"
UUEncoding.
Binscii is the standard for cba2, IMHO. When apple2 programs are written
to handle yEnc posts and decompress rar files I will ease up on the
standards.
The scans weren't done to be used on a real Apple II - their file-size
and resolution would, I think, make that I difficult proposition.
Here's a deal for you: when you host ground on a real IIgs, I'll make
the effort to make the scans usable on a real IIgs.
And finally, all of my scans will also be available at
computist.textfiles.com, which has become the "unofficial official"
Computist page. So, if you don't like the way I've posted them here, go
get them there.
Good luck!
