"1 bpp" and "JPEG" don't belong in the same sentence. JPEG is intended for
photographic images (color or grayscale) only.

Um... OK... (?) Maybe I never made it clear - I'm scanning these as grayscale images, not as searchable text - I've tried that a few times. What a nightmare. Easier to type it in. Heck, easier to type it in blindfolded, using my nose.

My scanner (Agfa SnapScan Touch) insists on scanning only to it's own
software - anything else dies with "Communication Error", so quality OCR
software like Omnipage is right out.

Will it save to formats other than JPEG? I'd recommend saving to BMP and
using other software to convert from BMP to something more efficient.

It does generate them, but I don't know enough about image types and manipulation to be able to produce anything useful. JPG works just fine for what I'm after - I just needed to figure out how to make the images smaller than a meg, and I did. OCR (vis hand-typing) will come after everything else. I'm probably going to have to hand-type the tabloid-sized issues anyway, as no one has offered a solution for that problem.
