Re: memory for apple IIgs

:
: No less a personage than Don Lancaster pointed out that
: Apple NEVER supplied the //gs with more than a 1 meg RAM
: card. Which meant that running AppleWorks GS was a wrist
: ruiner of disk swapping since Apple didn't really supply
: enough RAM to run a harddrive on the //gs.

Lest we not forget that Apple created an OS that more or
less required a IIgs with ROM03 and the 1MB ram card just
to run, much less anything else. 8o)

: He also was of the opinion that the //gs was best used
: as a Super //e. 2.5X faster, 1.25 megs of RAM, and with
: enhanced color and sound.

As I had stated I do use a ROM01 in just this way, and as
an 8-bit machine it is great. I thank GOD everyday that I
was able to acquire a ROM03 for 16-bit operations, and pray
as fervently that I can acquire another to replace it should
anything happen to it. 8o)

: Unless my memory is really gone PrintShop for the //gs
: was a ProDOS 8 package, that did what Lancaster said was
: the best use of the //gs.

I can't really comment on that, since my last use of the
Print Shop package ended in the late 80's when other and
better packages were created.

: Now, of course, third party hardware creates a //gs of
: a different color, my 10MHz Zipped //gs with 8 megs of
: RAM, even with the pathetic CMS SCSI card, is a not too
: shabby machine.

I'm hoping a new CPU and eeprom will fix my TWGS and then
I can join you in your praise of the accelerated IIgs. Of
course I will have an Apple HS SCSI card and 256 MB CFFA
in mine. My IIgs upgrade machine now has a Vulcan card with
a CF to IDE adapter with female IDC connection that has made
it a single card, but now it only is capable of an 8MB CF
card, hopefully I can get a 16-20 MB card to try. Being only
a GS/20 Vulcan it can't recognize the larger cards. 8o(
Possibly a rewrite of the firmware will allow them, but I'll
need to know how many CYLS, HDS, and Sectors they use in order
to make it work. If I am successful, I will post the updated
ROM on my website along with the Partition Manager to set up
the CF cards. Then others can use it too. 8o)

: Oh - I love running DR-DOS on a 200 mhz Pentium!

I also have a 150 MHz Pentium that is MS-DOS 6.22
and Windows 3.1 based, not set up and running right
now, but it works well for running the old games
and some other programs which I refuse to let go
of for now. 8o)
