No, there is no soft switch.  The video circuit was designed to kill
the colour burst signal on the composite video out when in text mode
but whenever a graphics mode was selected it would turn the colour
burst on so that you could get colours.  This resulted in clean text
when in text modes and text with colour bleeding if you were in one of
the mixed graphics/text modes.
