Dumb question about Ebay auctions and prices (platinum //e)

   Is the Platinum //e really that rare?  I was just wondering because
every time I look to see what's on E-Bay I always see these having high
bids.  For example:

   Now, I bought a Platium //e two years ago, unopened for $15 shipped.  
The sad part is, I didn't open the box until this last Monday.  And it
actually was unopened //e.  So I guess I don't know why it's 'rare'..
