It's called the auxiliary slot. Most IIe computers just have an Apple 
64KB memory card in it, but third-party manufacturers made cards with 
multiple 64KB banks of memory. Note that the card only provides the 
extra memory needed for 80-column text and double hi-res graphics, all 
the video hardware is already on the motherboard. The 80-column firmware 
is also in the motherboard ROM and is still mapped into slot 3, so most 
cards can't be used in slot 3 if there's anything in the auxiliary slot. 
The new slot also has some extra video signals on it which some RGB 
video cards use.

If you have the Canadian version of the IIe it should have some keys 
with two sets of characters printed on them. With the switch in the 
normal position the screen displays standard ASCII, in the alternate 
position it replaces some of the characters with French punctuation and 
accented letters.
