I've yet to install Linux on a Mac. You need a certain level of Mac,
and I've seen conflicting information about what Linux will run on. It's
hard to judge these third hand reports, because I have no idea how hard
someone has tried. But apart from until recently not having a recent enough
Mac, I didn't have the hard drive space. And there hasn't been as much
development on the Mac.
But, except for space, you might do well to grab an "IBM compatible" and
install Linux on that. Linux for such computers is obviously in good shape,
and it's not like they aren't readily available. I found a 200MHz Pentium
with 64megs of RAM in the garbage last spring, and so I think it's easier
to get a better "IBM compatible" than a decent used Mac.
