One more thing...

You didn't 'hot plug' any of the drives, did you?  One false move
hot-plugging the 3.5" drives...either connecting them to the computer, to
each other, or to the 5.25 drives...and you can fry the controller chip in
the drive that makes the daisy chaining work.  I don't remember the exact
symptom of that problem, whether it is that the 3.5 fails to work, or if
the 5.25 fails to work when connected through the 3.5...

The same sort of thing that happens if you get the plug off by one pin in
any direction with a Disk ][...
