 Becasue they are old and 99 times out of 100 when the symptoms are they won't
move one of the 4 directions, it's a broken wire.  Each direction, up, down,
left and right has a separate wire, and yes, it does break right where it goes
into the strain relief on the mouse. The wires are very thin, otherwise the
cable would be very stiff.

  Same with monitors, people tend to shove their monitors up against the wall,
and bend the cable at such a sharp angle it causes a failure in the extremely
thin wire.
