I remember the smell of the Apple II magazines. Each one had a
different smell -- Nibble, Call-APPLE, Open-Apple, A+ -- and I
would read them in bed cover to cover, then read them again,
while my Apple II on the desk played tune after tune from
"Electronic Jukebox".
I learned a lot from those magazines. Basic and assembler, of
course, and a lot of English too. I learned it was all right to
enjoy computers, that it was something many people did, even
adults, and I could understand what they were saying.
I lusted after Sider hard drives. I sent Uncle DOS letters with
dozens of questions in them. I dreamed of writing a program that
won the one-liner contest.
I lived in a smallish town and never had a modem until college.
For more than five years, Apple II magazines were my window to
the computer world. I still have them. Once in a while I'll take
one at random, open it to a page, marvel that I can still
remember the ads, wonder whatever happened to Sandy Mossberg or
Ron Aldrich... but what really takes me back is the smell.
