I tried the CD 600 with a ramfast and experienced the same sort of
problem. Tried a ROM 3 IIgs similiar to yours and a ROM 3 with nothing
in it except the ramfast with the same results. The IIgs would startup
with no CD in the drive but as soon as I inserted one the IIgs would
lock up.
