Re: Are Apple II+ memory chips with apple logo valuable?
<< Hi,
I recently bought a dead apple II europlus for spares and inside most of
the RAM chips have got an apple logo stamped on them in addition to the
manufacturers data (Mostek MK4116N-3). Does having this logo make them
valuable? The 5 chips I have tested were working so I guess most of the
other will be too.
I'm guessing that back in the early 80's apple could put their logo on
chips bought in from Mostek and then charge the end users a lot more
money for them. Today this would be called a rip-off.

More valuable? Maybe they're worth 6 cents each instead of 5 cents. I don't
think it adds too much value. Apple never sold Apple branded memory, I believe
the Apple logo was put on those RAM chips to verify that Apple installed RAM
was in the motherboard for warranty issues. And they put that small logo on
everyone's RAM chips they used, not just Mostek. And they didn't do it too
long, I remember seeing some of the original //e's with it.
Incidently, I worked at Mostek in Carrollton, TX in '80 and '81. Started in
the Probe dept, went to Goldback and then Lap dept. Good money working for the
graveyard shift. And it was widely known Mostek made some of the worst memory
chips. They were bought out by SGS Thompson about 20 years ago.
