The pictures are helpful.

You have an accoustic coupler, which may include a 300 baud
modem (but probably not).  Unless there's a fair amount of circuitry
(not just a couple of amplifiers) then this coupler was designed to
be attached to a modem for use.

The phone headset was placed in against the microphone and
speaker on the coupler to allow a modem to send and receive
without making any electrical connection to the phone line.  They
were very popular for calling computers from hotel and pay phones.

The battery is a very specialized "photo" battery, which was only
designed into equipment for a year or two, but I can't remember
just when the window was.
