I have no resentment towards Apple for not doing this today.
I DO disagree with Apple for not doing this when the Apple II
was clearly a very viable product.
In 1984, the Apple IIe Professional (an Apple IIe with DuoDisk
drives, a green phosphor Apple monitor, 128k, and 80 column)
was the most popular personal computer, not counting the
C64. It outsold the IBM PC. Within 3 years, Apple cut
advertisement for the Apple II line, leaving the Apple IIGS to
sell itself. It STILL sold more than the Macintosh in its first
few years. Apple repaid this by taking the money and
sinking it into Macintosh commercials and advertisement.
Apple squandered its user base. If the Apple II had had
some kind of transition to the Mac, like the Mac 68k to
PPC transition, I would have no problem with backward
compatibility eventually ending. But provide a bridge
of at least one generation. Instead, they produced the
IIGS then, 6 years after the fact, backtracked and made
a half-hearted attempt with a IIe card for the Mac LC.
A lot of Apple II users went to the PC.
Many people refuse to buy Microsoft products out of
some crusade or like. I choose not to continue support
for Apple the day they did this to the Apple II especially
IIGS users. That's my choice.
It is nothing to be amazed about. It is all about free
market economics. Apple did not earn my continued
support.
Now before someone hits me for the 1000th time with
"the 65C02 architecture could not have moved beyond..."
I say, hey they said the same about the 68k arcitecture
but Apple paid more attention to the Mac users and
they got a 68k to PPC transition.
Similarly, the first 64-bit AMD CPUs will support 32-bit
code. Understandably this won't be indefinite but at
least backward compatibility for ONE generation is
a very reasonable expectation.
