I don't have any useful information for you. However, there may be an
alternative solution to giving the C64 serial capability. Vince Briel, the
guy who's making the Apple 1 clone, uses the Basic Stamp 2 to interface his
project with a PC:

Might be of interest in case someone wants to throw a serial interface onto
something like a microwave oven or something. :P
