I think the Apple CDSC, CDSC+ and 150e have the best all-around compability
with the various cards, drivers, etc. I have used the CDSC and AppleCD 150e
with good success. But many SCSI CD-ROM units will work The compability
issues mostly involve the IIgs not recognizing an eject, new disc, can't
play audio CD's, etc. with particular CD/card combinations. (check the
CDROM section of the C.S.A2 FAQs for the specifics).
If you do a search for these drive units on ebay you usually get a few hits.
If not now then just add them to your favorite searches and they will come
up within a week or so, I bet. They can usually be gotten off there for <
$10-$15 + shipping. As a previous post stated, there are a handful of
CD-ROMs out there with lots of II goodies (games, utilities, system tools,
etc). on them that can be acquired quite reasonably.
You can burn a CD on your PC and read it on the IIgs, but I don't think that
GS/OS would recognize the file types on an ISO format CD-ROM. I seem to
recall that ISO volumes, when read on a GS, have some extra characters in
filenames, etc. So I think you lose the ability to double-click and have
GS/OS recognize the file/archive/etc type automatically. If you are just
wanting to burn compressed archives then it is probably no big deal to use
the PC. But if you have a Mac with a CDRW where you can write an HFS
formatted volume, that would probably be the best bet for ease of use on the
GS.
There is definitely a lot more usage potential for a CD ROM on a IIgs than a
IIe.
