The docs for Family Roots come in a faily stuffed loose-leaf binder and are not particularly easy to move to a Text file. It seems to be a good geneology package-- a sister used it to do lots of family tree stuff; but, you will need to get the docs from someone.
You may be better off getting Appleworks 5.x (e.g. from the Asimov archive) and a freeware geneology program named "Ancestor Works" (at http://www.geocities.com/budmannet/ ).
