'Bad' drives. Although the Mac *says* the disks were written OK, in reality they are not. Apple changed the drives a bit when going PowerPC, and the later ones do not handle ProDOS properly - they'll read them allright, but not make bootable copies (I've had the exact same problem). Use an earlier 68k Mac - Powerbook 68k drives seem especially tolerant - and it'll be OK.
