Well, I've been doing exactly what you wanna do with my B&W G3 + IIGS.
All you need is to install Appleshare for Apple IIGS and a free software
called Aasimov, on the GS side. Then have Appletalk and file sharing
activated on the G3 and you should be able to access your G3 drives from the
II GS, either using the Appletalk Control Panel on the GS or using Aasimov
which will list all your drives on your network. You're then able to make
floppies from disk images and vice-versa.
I think you need to be running OS 9 or earlier on the G3. I've tried with OS
X but though my GS sees my G3's drives, it won't connect.
Now, let's talk about the physical network. I used to use a localtalk box on
my G3 as I had added a Stealth serial port in it, but it had me switch
appletalk connection between ethernet and modem/printer port all the time,
depending on my needs. I then bought a AsantePrint which mixes my Ethernet
and Localtalk networks alltogether. Still, I haven't tried under OS 9 so
far. I just could realize that it wouldn't work under X as I told you
previously.
