Except for a cost-cutting measure.  Personally, I don't have a need for 
serial or SCSI on a newer Mac and ADB might be only be useful to hook up 
an external keyboard to my laptop...but it's not necessary.  One of the 
problems with ADB was that people kept on trying to use it as a 
hot-swappable bus when it wasn't designed for that.

There are solutions for serial, ADB and SCSI for the most part for new 
Macs.  If you want them, you spend the extra money for the 
compatibility.  I'd much prefer to have the newer better technology of 
USB/Firewire.
