I think it would be interesting (and possibly morale-boosting) to hear
from some of the new Apple 2 users who may be lurking out there... it
occurs to me that the motivations of someone approaching the A2 from
the wrong end of time could be quite different from those of the
'elders' who had the opportunity to evolve naturally with the machine.
Having started with Pentium and PowerPC machines, I guess it's hard to
envision trying to do anything 'useful' with a //e, whereas I'm sure
there are many out there who have stuck with their Apples over the
years and still use them for many practical purposes...
I'm very new to the Apple 2 (6 months) and I'm already heavily
addicted, though I realise that my interests are those of a hobbyist
and thus may be dismissed by some of the old-timers ;-)
Actually I'm old enough to have 'learned the computer' in high school,
but I was too busy with delinquency and missed out on the whole thing.
So there's no real specific sense of nostalgia -- other than a vague
feeling that the eighties might have been more fun if I'd have paid
more attention -- but I digress...
I guess what really attracts me to the A2 is that you can actually get
into the innards and brains of the thing and poke around at this and
that -- as opposed to Mac or Windows where anything beyond tickling
the interface puts your computer at great risk (if, like me, you are
an ignorant tinkerer). Not only that, but you can actually program the
little bugger after a few hours of light study... now that's what I
call 'user-friendly'...
It's also quite impressive to see the wealth of resources still
available to the A2 community, especially those wise old sages who
spend an awful lot of time answering stupid questions from the likes
of me.
Enough... I'll be weeping soon...
Sorry about the rambling, but it would be nice to hear from the other
'newbies' out there and find out why you got into the A2 and what your
experience has been thus far...
