ProDOS files copied to a OS X box

The most recent addition to the Network from Heck is a Mac capable of OS X.

As you may have gathered from my earlier scribblings, I seldom buy new
computers when a rebuilt junker will suit and this is no exception. I built
this thing out of a Mac 8500 I found at Goodwill and a few this and that parts
I had or I purchased.
Well.. once I had this puppy up I looked at the 10 gig ATA drive on this beast
and thought: Cool! Now I have a place to stash backups of my ProDOS disks!
Well, so far direct communication 'twixt a OS X and a Apple IIgs type box has
not been possible (except via Spectrum and Telnet. That works quite well),
but by adding a LC III (which makes an excellent monitor stand by the way ;)
and Localtalk Bridge, I can now copy the ProDOS volumes via Localtalk to the
LC, then with Ethernet and Appletalk to the OS X box. And THIS brings me to
the point of this:
Copying a ProDOS folder of say 30 megs from a LC (running System 7.1 with
a PDS Dynaport 10BT ethernet card) to a OS X machine ( Mac 8500 with Sonnet
G3/750 @450MHz 296megs/ VST ATA card 10 gig WD drive) done from the OS X
side takes like FOREVER!
A 30 meg "folder" on the LC to the OS X took about 15 minutes to copy.

Another observation: Once there, the ProDOS execurtables (Prodos,
Basic.System etc) DO show the proper ProDOS icon, but when clicke, Classic
starts then the OS X box pops an error message.
