There's a few reasons...OS X likes TCP/IP, even doing files tranfers.  
7.1 doesn't do that from what I've seen.  With TCP/IP file transfers 
things do go quicker.  Also, everything is slow on that LC...the hard 
drive, the system bus, the ethernet card...the fact that it could do 
ethernet almost seemed more of a convenience than anything speed related.

I have a Quadra 650 that I use as a sometimes file server...I won't log 
onto it from OS X...I'll get on it first and do the copy from it to my 
OS X machine.  It's quicker that way.  (I also have Appleshare updated 
on it so it can connect via TCP/IP...it is running 8.1.)

Anything resembling normal Appletalk under OS X is really only there as 
an afterthought...
