As the Publisher of Spectrum and Spectrum Internet Suite, I'd hope that I
have more than a clue ;-)

Using the world wide web and using Telnet are two very different
things. The Spectrum Internet Suite is for "surfing the web" but in
order to access public shell systems via Telnet, you'd be advised to do
that using the Spectrum program itself, rather than using SIS.

Unix (or Linux) shells expect that you'll be entering their system using
VT-100 Emulation, and if you're not, you'll see all sorts of "garbage" on
screen. That "garbage" contains VT-100 codes which are only interpreted
correctly if you telnet into that system using Spectrum's VT-100 Online
Display.

So, in order for those codes to be interpreted correctly, you simply need
to invoke VT-100 emulation. So, _before_ opening a socket to those remote
systems, make sure that your Online Display is set to VT-100.

If you continue to have problems, save the following one-liner, and
execute it as a Spectrum Script before trying to telnet into those remote
computers:

Set Telnet Terminal "VT100"

Please note: you must use this script command before opening the socket
to the remote system, and not after you've already Telnet'ed in.

Please Note, Part II: Re-reading the above, I keep using the word
"before" for a good reason. Set your Online Display to VT-100 first, then
if need be execute the above script, and then lastly, Telnet to the remote
computer.

On a related subject...since I only have your nom-de-computer and not
your real name...I can't look up in my database to see if you are using
the latest version of Spectrum (v2.5.2). If you are not, a very low cost
update is available - and depending on which version of Spectrum you want
to update - that could be as little as $5, which includes postage.

Full details about updating Spectrum to the latest version can be found
at my web site:

http://users.foxvalley.net/~joko

I hope the above info helps, but if you continue to have problems, my job
as publisher is to help you get the most from Spectrum, so have no
fear...we'll get you up and running and able to access those remote
systems.
