Is there something really special about the cable, or is it merely 
non-standard?

It can be difficult to make a cable if you don't have the tool to press 
things properly, but so long as it uses available connectors, the ribbon 
cable is off the shelf and one could hopefully find someone who could 
crimp things together properly, and for less than fifty dollars.
