Good point, thanks for the clarification. I think I only ever used
cables that came with my PhoneNet adapters, so didn't have to look
closely at that issue.

The phone system in some countries does (or did) use more than 2 wires.
New Zealand's standard domestic telephone wiring for many years had a
third "anti-tinkle" wire, which interfaced with the phone line at the
master jack via an RC circuit and was used to suppress tinkling of the
bells in older telephones during on-hook/off-hook or when using pulse
dialling.
