arguably that was the non genius of it, the other pair was often used as a second line ... our house was wired that way for decades, one "home" line, one for dad's biz on the other pair during the rise and fall of the telco based home office this is a real issue, course now-days, we don't even have land lines, I unhooked the lines from the telco walplate and use them as serial lines heh
