I really wouldn't go as far to rebuild everything from the board up, and ESD damage, its not impossible, but I spent 3 months of my life earlier with a 30KV ESD gun directly zapping chips with a 3 inch spark in positive and negative potentials ... 

I caused a bunch of damage BUT even in the most extreme situations it did not result in 100% outright failure 100% of the time (more like 60% of the time) all parts would be derogated and damaged, but that does not mean nonfunctional ... which lead me to another 3 months of UGH.

If that helps your mind any?

If you want to start tackling this, what electronics tools do you have available, I am thinking minimum a multimeter and a logic probe (which is not THAT hard for someone to make on the cheap)
