I was lazy and put the ZIF in the existing socket - I didn't bother to remove the original. I've run 12.5MHZ ZipGS and TWGS boards in it extensively without any problems (I don't have anything faster currently). The sole purpose was to save wear and tear on the delicate pins on the cables. Finding a ZIF with long enough pins was the only complication. I did the same thing in my //e with a 8MHz ZipChip. No problems with it either - just made the sockets taller.
