I have an (unplayed) .dsk image of the DL crack of the re-release, and it runs through to the "generate new char" / "continue previous" screen OK (on AppleWin at least). At which title screen does yours freeze? (crack page, Origin logo, Ultima anim, menu)
I also have (unplayed) .dsk images of the original release (with no crack title or anything).
But I don't know what the re-release did for player disks. Maybe there's an article on it in Computist. I take it that the current player disk doesn't copy as normal?
