A few (not-so-serious) theories:

1. Apple II users (because of the Apple II, or because they were the type to select the Apple II) are, in general, more successful and do not have time for playing video games. :-) However, they do have the time to write them.

2. Apple is not dead yet. Unlike all the aforementioned platforms, Apple has not stopped delivering newer stuff. Perhaps users just keep moving forward.

3. An Apple II "gamer" cracked games--that was the game. When the games dried up, it was game over. :-) I am kinda half serious about this point. The pirates I knew cracked and collected for the sake of doing so, that was the game. They didn't play the games to the point where they considered themselves gamers.
