Hey, guys!

I'm in the hut for a 7407N IC for a project
snip

The 7404 is an inverter. It outputs the opposite of whatever logic
level you put in.

the 7407 is an open collector hex buffer
but the DIP version doesn't seem to be available, http://www.radioshack.com/searchsku.asp?find=900-3589

I would look into some quad or octal line buffers such as
74HCT125 http://www.radioshack.com/searchsku.asp?find=900-3287
74HCT244 http://www.radioshack.com/searchsku.asp?find=900-3300

if a 7407 were a TTL logic inverter, I think my youngest daughter would work as a drop in replacement. Whatever you tell her, she outputs the opposite. Quickly too. So she could even be put in place of a 74S series whatever.
