Well I sort of had a similar problem with an earlier G3 in that both serial
ports were in use. What I did was use a compact mac(like the SE, Color Classic,
SE30,etc) with an ethernet card to bridge the gap. I connected the compact mac
to the G3 via ethernet and from the IIgs to the compact mac via serial port.
Then I ran LocalTalk Bridge on the compact mac. Results, I can see the
G3s hd on my IIgs desktop. The compact macs hd can ce on both the
G3s and the IIgs desktop which can be handy. I didn't stay with OSX long
enough to give it a try and haven't picked up 10.1 so I don't know if this
will still work but it's an idea.
