Realtime decoding is out, but it is certainly possible to write an
off-line MP3 decoder that would output, say, stereo 8-bit samples
at a sampling rate of 22.050KHz for reasonable fidelity, or even
11.025KHz for "AM stereo" fidelity, and a 2:1 saving in disk space.

An option to fold the stereo samples to mono would save another
factor of two.

There are real-time players for the IIgs that can play at least
11.025KHz mono from hard disk--and I would think that stereo
would also be possible at this rate.  Perhaps a good use for
DMA disk transfers.  ;-)
