Okay, maybe the difference here is in what model of the Apple II being
discussed.  It may be that the original Apple II and maybe even all
the way up to the IIe or IIc use a 3.6mm jack.  However, I'm pretty
sure the IIgs uses a 3.5mm jack as I, like Supertimer, have never had
any problems using headphones, amplified speakers or patch cords to
connect to a stereo.

I just took a quick look through the Apple IIgs Hardware Reference but
couldn't find the headphone jack size listed anywhere.
