It's obviously not the cable, since otherwise you wouldn't get any
data transferred at all. I've been running ADT (not ADTgs though,
but the standard ADT) with a simple 3-wire cable (RxD, TxD, GND) and
it worked fine, at a speed which could be expected.
Perhaps you could try to examine the serial port lines using a
"break box", to see which lines are "live" and which aren't, which
one changes and how often, etc.
