That's what I plan to do -- I have a null modem cable running to a virtual
machine through a serial to USB adapter.  The problem is that the
communication is only one way at the moment.  Commands can be sent to the
Apple II but nothing comes back through the cable out to telnet.

I was able to get a telnet connection as you describes above using KEGS or
maybe it was XGS.  It wasn't completely reliable but it did let me log into
my AppleNet BBS for the first time in 20 years :).  I'd really like to run
this "new" one on actual hardware.
