back of the QDrive. It's one digit and goes from 0 to 6 but not a peep
about it in the manual. I took the cover off to see if it was real and it
is indeed wired to the drive.

Yep, it's a SCSI id.
quick and simple:
1) set it to 6 and install your SCSI card in slot 6.
2) power up and see if your problem has disappeared.
0-6 seems like an odd number sequence (no slot 7)
I seem to remember my school //e had a similar reaction when I was first
learning about hard drives and it was solved with the proper assignment of the
SCSI number and moving the SCSI card from slot 5 to slot7 (I had preferred
having the //e boot from slot 6 still because I was still working from mostly
floppies.)
