Along with the reference regarding Roberta Williams there is an informal
history of
the game and Sierra Online and how it came to be developed on the Apple, in
the 2nd half of the book,  "Hackers - Heros of the Computer Revolution", by
Steven Levy.
Talk about a shoe-string operation hitting it big!!!

House was the first ever graphic adventure game, created by none other
than Roberta Williams. This game is now public domain, in case you
want to check it out.
