Apple II discriminates

Strange - I just got these two vanilla II+'es (Europluses), and the
original Apple II diskdrive w/interface.

This works well in one of them (both boot and respond fine), but when I
put the drive/interface combo onto the other II+,
I get read and boot errors. Same drive, same interface, same cable, same
disks, works good in one but has troubles in another II.

Putting the interface into another slot on the 'buggy' II didn't help.
It does recognise the disks though and responds to PR#6 commands. Any ideas?
