I can't imagine that performance could be that huge a problem, considering
that the Apple II is not exactly a speed demon by today's standards.

I'm amazed by the concept of writing an Apple II emulator in HyperCard
though.  My hat goes off to you.

I've considered attempting to write a BASIC interpreter in Perl, but never
started on it.
