The issue is that the iMac (typically) does not have a serial port. It
is possible to replace the modem with an RS-422 port on some models, or
you can get a USB<->Serial adapter. Seonho's idea may work, provided
that ADT or MacADT does not try to reinitialize the serial port, as many
communications programs will allow you to quit without dropping carrier.
Kermit on the Apple II will do this, and I believe that ZTerm or
Clarisworks (perhaps any CTB program) does this on the Mac.
There are a few things which I'm uncertain on though: I believe that modems
treat particular sequences of characters as control codes. For example:
'+++' to enter the modem's command mode, and probably XON/XOFF for software
flow control. This may be an issue while sending raw data. Maybe not.
Also, if ADT/MacADT causes the modem to drop carrier because the serial
port is being reinitialized, turning off hardware flow control (CTS/DTR?)
may help. Again, idle speculation.
Another problem is that MacADT may not work on your iMac. I have had a lot
of trouble with this program under System 7.5.5, and it doesn't appear to be
really happy unless running under System 6. (System 7.0 or 7.1, I can't
remember how it behaved.) So if you are planning on getting a USB<->Serial
adapter for this purpose, be sure to try MacADT first.
I don't know how useful (or accurate) this piecemeal batch of knowledge is,
but hopefully enough to get you somewhere.
Byron.
