OK, then transfer your Apple II disk images to a normal Mac and then
use a floppy disk to transfer them to your iMac....

Not quite. To make your modem reenter command mode, the proper protocol
is:
(pause 1 sec) '+++' (pause 1 sec)
i.e. only if you sorround the '+++' with pauses will they cause the
modem to enter command mode. If ADT encounters three '+' following
one another in a disk image it won't pause, so this is no problem.

This can be turned on and off.
Another thing to consider is hardware flow control via the RTS/CTS
lines: you must then feed the modem the proper signals, or else it
won't transfer any data.
