FidoNET was /is an amateur BBS network which used a store and forward
messaging system for the delivery of messages (known as Netmail and
echomail - the latter being similar to Usenet newsgroups).  The nodes
in the FidoNET network all used dialup modems for mail delivery and
delays in message delivery were inevitable.

I can remeber getting my first 2400bps modem and being the envy of
every other local BBS user since I could download files faster than
anybody else :)
