It's shorting one of the power lines; that causes the switcher to shut
down and causes that clicking noise.  Probably a bad component on the
logic board somewhere.  Isolating it could be difficult.  You might
try hooking just the power lines up to another supply (be sure and
load the supply appropriately also, e.g. with a headlamp), and finding the
chip which gets very hot.  Don't test this with a real Apple II, the
short _can_ damage other components.
