Under DOS 3.3, the name of the startup program is determined by the
filename specified in the INIT command. Most of my old disks are
formatted with a startup program named "THE LAST FILE", one of those
ironic things since it's usually the first program on the CATALOG list.
There is also a frequently overlooked second startup program
option...under DOS 3.3, if an attempt to run the usual startup program
(with the name specified during format) results in a LANGUAGE NOT
AVAILABLE error, DOS 3.3 will proceed to attempt to load a program called
APPLESOFT instead. Changing the name of the alternate program requires
patching DOS. You can see how this works using a DOS 3.3 System
Master...the programs HELLO and APPLESOFT are identical except that HELLO
is an Applesoft BASIC program that attempts to load Integer BASIC into the
language card, while APPLESOFT is an Integer BASIC program that attemps to
load Applesoft into the language card.
: Yes. A single byte patch will change the command used by DOS 3.3 to run
: the startup program. I probably have it in my '80s era notebook

I realize that in this day and age it is pretty much a moot point, but it
should be noted that the patch assumes DOS 3.3 loaded into its standard
location in a 48k machine. Of course, every Apple ][ built since about
1980 is, for DOS 3.3 purposes, a 48k machine..... 8-)
