    Another loose indication if cards have been installed is to check
if the lid is screwed on (Apple shipped IIgs's from the factory with
screw inserted at the back of the case lid--top center).

    Since the case lid snaps shut on it's own, I can't imagine too
many people wanting to replace the screw after opening their
IIgs for the first time. Schools on the other hand rarely upgraded
IIgs's, so it's not that uncommon to find them never-before-opened 
with the screw still in place. Still--I agree with Roy, the only way
to know for certain is to lift up the lid and look inside.
